Hi, my name is Ruth. I work as a teaching assistant at a local Primary School. I live in Belper with my 3 children Brodie, Eliot and Taylor, as well as my husband, Luke. Brodie was diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum when he was 3. He attended a mainstream primary school with his brother and sister and is now starting a Special Needs Secondary School, thanks to the support and funding he accesses through his EHCP plan.

Special Friends is a charity very close to my heart. When I moved to Belper in 2014, despite meeting some lovely Mums at the school, I felt very isolated. When I first went along to a Special Friends evening get together I instantly felt warmth, understanding and support from parents who were going through the same things as me. I quickly started volunteering at the monthly playgroup and helping with fundraising, and have found this so rewarding. My whole family has benefitted greatly from all the wonderful activities and have made what will hopefully be lifelong friends.

I am privileged to be on the board of Trustees as Vice Chairperson. I especially enjoy supporting the brothers and sisters of our children with additional needs through our focussed Siblings Workshops and Siblings United adventure days .
